{"id":3573,"date":"2020-05-12T21:34:54","date_gmt":"2020-05-12T20:34:54","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/globalindianstories.com\/?p=3573"},"modified":"2020-05-14T07:41:21","modified_gmt":"2020-05-14T06:41:21","slug":"lockdown-diaries-baithak-uk-brings-artists-virtually-together-for-music-video-celebrating-togetherness","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/globalindianstories.org\/index.php\/2020\/05\/12\/lockdown-diaries-baithak-uk-brings-artists-virtually-together-for-music-video-celebrating-togetherness\/","title":{"rendered":"Lockdown Diaries: Baithak UK brings artists virtually together for music video celebrating togetherness"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Despite the logistical issues posed by COVID-19,\u00a0<span class=\"s1\">Baithak UK has managed to bring together artists virtually in order to make a music video which celebrates\u00a0togetherness.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Those were the days&#8221; celebrates the power of music and memory, beautifully melding<span class=\"s1\"> the globally popular folk song by Robert Burns &#8220;Auld Lang Syne&#8221;, its Bengali adaptation by Rabindranath Tagore, and the recent translation (written exclusively for Baithak UK) by Indian legendary poet Javed Akhtar.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Sangeeta Datta, Baithak UK&#8217;s Artistic Director, explains, &#8220;the folk song Auld Lang Syne is about reunion with friends. We all want to reunite with family and friends right now, but are unable to.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">In the face of all the challenges posed by these lockdown times, many artists generously\u00a0responded to Baithak\u2019s call and came together to record for the video in their home studios or using their mobile phones.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_3683\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3683\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-3683 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/globalindianstories.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/ThoseWereTheDays_Stills1-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" srcset=\"https:\/\/globalindianstories.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/ThoseWereTheDays_Stills1-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/globalindianstories.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/ThoseWereTheDays_Stills1-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/globalindianstories.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/ThoseWereTheDays_Stills1-747x420.jpg 747w, https:\/\/globalindianstories.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/ThoseWereTheDays_Stills1-640x360.jpg 640w, https:\/\/globalindianstories.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/ThoseWereTheDays_Stills1.jpg 800w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-3683\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Javed Akhtar<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Adapting the material wasn&#8217;t without its trials, as poet\u00a0Javed Akhtar elaborates, &#8220;the challenge in translating Tagore is to retain the simplicity, purity, this magical poetry of love. How does one carry this from one language to another? Someone has rightly said, however carefully you pour incense from one jar to another, some of it will get lost in the ether. But this is Tagore\u2019s music, its fragrance would not fade in anyway.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The short film also contains an urgent message about &#8216;Masks For All&#8217; and is promoting two charities &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/kolkatagives.in\/maskforall\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Kolkata Gives<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mijwan.org\/campaigns\/1millionmasks4onemillionpeople-help-mijwan-welfare-society-combat-covid-1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mijwan Welfare Society<\/a> &#8211; which are each raising funds to distribute 1 million masks for 1 million people.<\/p>\n<div class=\"youtube-embed\" data-video_id=\"FvB-utqpUpo\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Those Were The Days - Official Music Video\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/FvB-utqpUpo?feature=oembed&#038;enablejsapi=1\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p><em>We also had the pleasure of an interview with\u00a0Sangeeta Datta, Baithak UK&#8217;s Artistic Director, to ask her more about the video.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>How did this idea of a music video come into play?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>As you know, Javed Sahib and I have collaborated on a Hindi Tagore album (Anant published by Zee Music) with eight songs that he translated into Hindi. It seemed both ironic and poignant that in these lockdown times we had these beautiful songs which express a desire for reunion with friends and loved ones. I felt they could be put into context in these present times of social isolation.<\/p>\n<p>It was daunting to think of making a music video when we can\u2019t really shoot outdoors these days. but tying up with the charities and raising awareness about mask safety made these plans quite urgent and so we rose to the challenge!<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_3700\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3700\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-3700\" src=\"https:\/\/globalindianstories.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/ThoseWereTheDays_Stills2b-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" srcset=\"https:\/\/globalindianstories.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/ThoseWereTheDays_Stills2b-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/globalindianstories.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/ThoseWereTheDays_Stills2b.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-3700\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Shankar Mahadevan<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>I felt we should make this a collaborative project and reached out to all my friends in the film and music industry. They all came back very quickly saying they were in.<\/p>\n<p>Getting all the material, audio and video, from each artist took time, so we had to extend our deadlines. The video has been made in lockdown conditions with each person filming home video style and I stepped out into my blossoming garden to do my section!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Could you tell us about the Tagore songs from the project that are closest to your heart, and how you decided to feature them?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>We have translated different themed songs for our album Anant and even now we are moving around the broad spectrum of Tagore songs from Puja (Prayer) Prem (Love) and Prakriti (Nature songs). Shankar Mahadevan and Kaushiki Chakraborty are the biggest and best in music, so they sing Tagore in Hindi for the first time.<\/p>\n<p>Actor-director-singer Parambrata Chatterjee is a big name in the Bengali film industry, Rupam Islam and Sourendro-Soumyojit are popular music stars, Pramita Mallick is a stalwart in Rabindrasangeet, Patricia Rozario is a world famous soprano singer in London and Sasha Ghosal is a household name with his Bengali music and recent appearances in musicals like Bend it Like Beckham.
