Personal safety has been thrown aside in a quest for justice.<\/p>\n<p>The deep upset and anger caused by the death of George Floyd has been felt far and wide, and it&#8217;s certainly not just African Americans that can sympathise with the systemic ill-treatment of their people. Soumik Datta a Bengali-born, British Indian musician and composer has written a poem which captures his feelings, not only about racism but about his personal experiences at the hands of prejudiced bullies.<\/p>\n<p><em>I\u2019ve been feeling so weird all week<\/em><br \/>\n<em> A strange kind of numbness,<\/em><br \/>\n<em> Thinking about why these childhood<\/em><br \/>\n<em> Memories have washed up,<\/em><br \/>\n<em> Like garbage on a beach&#8230;<\/em><\/p>\n<div class=\"text_exposed_show\">\n<p><em>Sure, I was punched and kicked and<\/em><br \/>\n<em> Called a \u2018Paki\u2019<\/em><br \/>\n<em> I cleaned floors that were not mine,<\/em><br \/>\n<em> Woke up to buckets of ice<\/em><br \/>\n<em> In the dead of night,<\/em><br \/>\n<em> Gave my wallet to bigger kids who<\/em><br \/>\n<em> Spat in my face,<\/em><br \/>\n<em> But none of that stung<\/em><br \/>\n<em> Nearly as much as the time my<\/em><br \/>\n<em> Mind joined in the battle against me<\/em><br \/>\n<em> And suddenly it was easier&#8230;<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>To see why<\/em><br \/>\n<em> I couldn\u2019t<\/em><br \/>\n<em> Hang with those other kids,<\/em><br \/>\n<em> Why I couldn\u2019t play on that team,<\/em><br \/>\n<em> Why I was happy to come second and<\/em><br \/>\n<em> Stand behind them,<\/em><br \/>\n<em> The Asian<\/em><br \/>\n<em> Friend.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>It\u2019s fine, I thought,<\/em><br \/>\n<em> Being the subject<\/em><br \/>\n<em> Of other people\u2019s jokes<\/em><br \/>\n<em> Hell, I found it funny too<\/em><br \/>\n<em> To laugh at myself, against myself, at<\/em><br \/>\n<em> Punchlines about \u2018Pakis\u2019, about people like<\/em><br \/>\n<em> My Mum and my Dad, who had<\/em><br \/>\n<em> worked and Worked and struggled and<\/em><br \/>\n<em> Crossed oceans<\/em><br \/>\n<em> Giving up everything<\/em><br \/>\n<em> To find their children<\/em><br \/>\n<em> Opportunities.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>That guy in my head grew<\/em><br \/>\n<em> Louder and Stronger<\/em><br \/>\n<em> Fed by the illness in my brain,<\/em><br \/>\n<em> And it made me do things to myself<\/em><br \/>\n<em> To fit in.<\/em><br \/>\n<em> To belong.<\/em><br \/>\n<em> To accept and<\/em><br \/>\n<em> Move on.<\/em><br \/>\n<em> Scars that will always remain<\/em><br \/>\n<em> Beneath the melanin<\/em><br \/>\n<em> And my pain,<\/em><br \/>\n<em> That will forever<\/em><br \/>\n<em> Be there<\/em><br \/>\n<em> Invisible to your<\/em><br \/>\n<em> Eye.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>I see it now<\/em><br \/>\n<em> Racism is an illness,<\/em><br \/>\n<em> A spineless virus crawling<\/em><br \/>\n<em> In the minds of oppressors and bullies,<\/em><br \/>\n<em> In the silence of the apathetic<\/em><br \/>\n<em> In the hearts of those who learn to cope<\/em><br \/>\n<em> By laughing along with a joke<\/em><br \/>\n<em> Until it\u2019s not funny anymore<\/em><br \/>\n<em> And a white knee is pressed down on a<\/em><br \/>\n<em> Black neck for<\/em><br \/>\n<em> 8 minutes and<\/em><br \/>\n<em> 46 seconds<\/em><br \/>\n<em> Then cities burn<\/em><br \/>\n<em> And fires rise<\/em><br \/>\n<em> And the whole world<\/em><br \/>\n<em> Screams<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cI Can\u2019t Breathe\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"_58cn\"
