Before his Twitter account was suspended, Indian lawyer Vibhor Anand published some big \u201crevelations\u201d to his 87k followers. Anand shared a tweet with pictures of Bollywood stars Salman Khan and Jacqueline Fernandes, as well as members of the British Royal family with clumsily photoshopped bloodshot eyes, claiming the Bollywood elite is involved in drug and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=o4IP3GlGRgQ\"><span class=\"s2\">child trafficking<\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\"><span class=\"s1\">In other videos, Anand claimed \u2013 baselessly \u2013 that Salman Khan has a penchant for young boys and that\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=oXWr-rarAdU\"><span class=\"s3\">Aditya Thackeray<\/span><\/a> is a paedophile. Shortly after his speculations, that both\u00a0keep trafficked children at their respective farm houses, Republic TV\u00a0journalists were\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theweek.in\/news\/india\/2020\/09\/09\/republic-tv-reporters-held-for-trespassing-in-uddhav-thackeray-farmhouse.html\"><span class=\"s3\">arrested for trespassing<\/span><\/a>\u00a0at Thackeray&#8217;s Karjat Farmhouse.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\"><span class=\"s1\">It shows Q lore has been adapted to take on local issues in India, moving from the fringe to the mainstream \u2013 just as in the USA and some parts of Europe. This \u201copen-source intelligence effort\u201d mobilises WhatsApp groups and closed networks in a manner which can be leveraged for political gain at a later date. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p5\"><span class=\"s4\">The attacks on the film fraternity and the Maharashtra government fit into the <i>de rigueur<\/i> narrative since the unfortunate suicide of actor Sushant Singh Rajput in June. M<\/span><span class=\"s1\">ultiple notices have been issued to Republic TV by the Mumbai police in Sushant Singh, Palghar lynching and Bandra <a href=\"https:\/\/thewire.in\/media\/republic-tv-mumbai-police-trp-arnab-goswami\"><span class=\"s5\">cases<\/span><\/a> and 34 Bollywood producers <a href=\"https:\/\/thewire.in\/law\/bollywood-republic-tv-times-now-delhi-hc\"><span class=\"s5\">moved<\/span><\/a> the High Court against irresponsible <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=rPGQFFCuga8&amp;list=PLpHbno9djTOSaBHKTrtbsKkn6MDUujQxX&amp;index=13\"><span class=\"s5\">remarks<\/span><\/a> by Republic and Times Now.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"p4\"><span class=\"s1\">The origins and growth of QAnon<\/span><\/h4>\n<p class=\"p4\"><span class=\"s1\">The US conspiracy theory, that has gained traction <a href=\"https:\/\/www.logically.ai\/articles\/conspiracy-theorists-without-borders-how-qanon-mutated-in-europe\"><span class=\"s6\">in Europe too<\/span><\/a>, is based on Q, an anonymous figure who claims to be a high-level government employee. Q claims to release confidential information (known as \u2018Q Drops\u2019) that is only privy to the highest level of government. Anand aims to replicate this same method citing mysterious \u201csources\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cQ Drops\u201d are often cryptic and they redirect the followers to Q research groups and forums where YouTube videos and memes are shared. This material is in turn posted across social media platforms and the conspiracy organically grows.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\"><span class=\"s1\">The followers of QAnon, believe that the Hollywood elite along with members of the Democratic party in the US run a child-sex trafficking ring and extract adrenochrome to promote their own youth and vitality. They also believe that this cannibalistic paedophile cabal is secretly controlling the world, and that President Donald Trump is working to overthrow them.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\"><span class=\"s1\">A recent<a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/tommybeer\/2020\/09\/02\/majority-of-republicans-believe-the-qanon-conspiracy-theory-is-partly-or-mostly-true-survey-finds\/#38f0705b5231\"><span class=\"s3\">\u00a0poll<\/span><\/a>\u00a0states that 56 percent of Republicans in the US believe the theories of Q.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\"><span class=\"s3\"><a href=\"https:\/\/thespinoff.co.nz\/society\/07-04-2020\/explainer-adrenochrome-the-drug-that-doesnt-exist\/\">Conjecture about adrenochrome<\/a><\/span><span class=\"s1\">\u2019s psychotropic and vitality-inducing qualities can be traced back not to Vibhor Anand\u2019s \u201crevelations\u201d, but to the American writer Hunter S. Thompson. In Thompson\u2019s novel,\u00a0<i>Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas<\/i>, he fictionalizes adrenochrome. His character, Dr. Gonzo (played by Benicio del Toro in a trippy movie adaption), says that it can only be obtained from the adrenal glands of a human body.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\"><span class=\"s1\">For the avoidance of doubt, adrenochrome does not come from the bodies of captive children, let alone human bodies. It does not make you younger, nor does it get you high.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\"><span class=\"s3\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/qanon-deploys-information-warfare-influence-2020-election\/\">For comparison<\/a><\/span><span class=\"s1\">, there were 22,232,285 tweets using #Qanon and related hashtags such as #Q, #Qpatriot, and #TheGreatAwakening in 2019 \u2013 an average of 60,910 per day. The total exceeded other popular hashtags such as #MeToo (5,231,928 tweets in 2019) or #climatechange (7,510,311 tweets).<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\"><span class=\"s1\">Anand\u2019s inconsistency of claims and attempts to stay in the spotlight may not last long, but there is a good chance that the narratives he lifts from the lore of QAnon are likely to live on in public memory; his theories have already helped him gain a significant number of followers, and there already exists an established conspiracy network around QAnon.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"p4\"><span class=\"s1\">Moving from the fringe to having real-world consequences<\/span><\/h4>\n<p class=\"p4\"><span class=\"s1\">In the past, conspiracy theories hardly mattered. They thrived on the fringes and affected little of consequence. However, in the information age, conspiracy theories can spill over from the internet and have real world effects, especially when seemingly validated by mainstream TV channels.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\"><span class=\"s1\">In the U.S., there have been some extremely\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.logically.ai\/articles\/double-check-is-qanon-harmless\"><span class=\"s3\">harmful<\/span><\/a>\u00a0effects of the QAnon conspiracy theories, and the\u00a0FBI\u00a0has even named the fringe conspiracy group as a potential\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thedailybeast.com\/fbi-warns-against-qanon-pizzagate-in-report-highlighting-dangers-of-fringe-conspiracy-theories\"><span class=\"s3\">domestic terrorism\u00a0<\/span><\/a>threat.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\"><span class=\"s1\">According to a recent report by the<a href=\"https:\/\/economictimes.indiatimes.com\/news\/politics-and-nation\/mumbai-kolkata-see-highest-women-child-trafficking-cases-ncrb-study\/articleshow\/74053964.cms\"><span class=\"s3\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s7\">National Crime Records Bureau<\/span><\/a> in India,\u00a0more than 600 women and 180 children go missing every hour in India. India has become both a destination and a transit route for drug trafficking. According to the\u00a0Narcotics Control Bureau of India, 49,450 cases were registered for drug seizures in 2018.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\"><span class=\"s1\">As child and drug trafficking are real problems, a sudden upswing in online vigilantism prompted by a QAnon-style conspiracy in India could<a href=\"https:\/\/www.logically.ai\/articles\/it-was-never-about-the-kids-qanon-taking-pizzagate-to-the-streets\"><span class=\"s3\">\u00a0obscure the efforts\u00a0<\/span><\/a>made by authorities and organisations seeking to address these problems.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\"><span class=\"s1\">Theories like Q will only widen the chasm, spreading harmful narratives and dividing the country further.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Conspiracy theorists in India are seizing the opportunity to co-opt what in the Western world is better known as the QAnon conspiracy theory.
