{"id":5781,"date":"2021-06-12T13:53:28","date_gmt":"2021-06-12T12:53:28","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/globalindianstories.com\/?p=5781"},"modified":"2021-06-12T13:56:02","modified_gmt":"2021-06-12T12:56:02","slug":"feeling-zoomed-out-advice-for-the-fatigued","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/globalindianstories.org\/index.php\/2021\/06\/12\/feeling-zoomed-out-advice-for-the-fatigued\/","title":{"rendered":"Feeling Zoomed Out? &#8211; Advice for the fatigued"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"x_x_gmail-p2\"><span class=\"x_x_gmail-s2\">Do you remember when a videoconference was an infrequent occurrence &#8211; something special that you looked forward to?<\/span><span class=\"x_x_gmail-s2\"><span class=\"x_x_gmail-Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0Whilst being locked down, video-calling gave us a way to see each other, even when we couldn&#8217;t be with each other.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<h4>The novelty wears thin<\/h4>\n<p class=\"x_x_gmail-p3\"><span class=\"x_x_gmail-s2\">My first few months of the pandemic were filled with virtual business meetings, virtual learning, virtual happy hour, and even virtual board game nights.<\/span><span class=\"x_x_gmail-s2\"><span class=\"x_x_gmail-Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"x_x_gmail-s2\">As a result, the boundaries between the various parts of my life have become blurred. While work, friends, and family used to all have their separate space, they are now all muddled together, overlapping, and fighting for screen priority.<\/span><span class=\"x_x_gmail-s2\"><span class=\"x_x_gmail-Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_x_gmail-p2\"><span class=\"x_x_gmail-s2\">After 15 months of living in a virtual world, the novelty has started to wear off. I am getting tired of having to make myself and my home camera-ready at a moment\u2019s notice, and evening video calls with family and friends have started to feel like work meetings.<\/span><span class=\"x_x_gmail-s2\"><span class=\"x_x_gmail-Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_x_gmail-p4\"><span class=\"x_x_gmail-s3\">What is more, I am finding that I am exhausted at the end of my workday and since 2021 kicked off, comments of \u2018Zoom fatigue\u2019 have popped up more and more frequently in my conversations (<\/span><span class=\"x_x_gmail-s4\">though this exhaustion also applies if you\u2019re using Google Hangouts, Skype, FaceTime, or any other video-calling interface<\/span><span class=\"x_x_gmail-s3\">)<\/span><span class=\"x_x_gmail-s2\">.<\/span><span class=\"x_x_gmail-s2\"><span class=\"x_x_gmail-Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_x_gmail-p5\"><span class=\"x_x_gmail-s2\">I&#8217;ve found that several factors make virtual meetings legitimately exhausting. They<\/span><span class=\"x_x_gmail-s5\">\u00a0are more demanding cognitively than face-to-face meetings, which rely a lot on visual cues. It is easy to tell if people are paying attention, whether someone wants to speak, whether they are agreeing or disagreeing, and so forth. In a Zoom meeting, it is much more challenging to gauge people, even if people are explicitly nodding or raising their hands, it takes extra effort to scan through all the participants.<\/span><span class=\"x_x_gmail-s5\"><span class=\"x_x_gmail-Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<h4>Videoconferencing advice<\/h4>\n<p class=\"x_x_gmail-p8\"><span class=\"x_x_gmail-s6\">Thankfully, there are steps you can take to make the most of remote working while preserving your energy (and sanity).<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_x_gmail-p9\" style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span class=\"x_x_gmail-s2\"><b>1. Eliminate Distractions<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_x_gmail-p8\" style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span class=\"x_x_gmail-s6\">This may seem like an obvious suggestion, but you might be more distracted during your virtual meetings than you realise.\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"x_x_gmail-s2\">Many distractions are not always present in face-to-face meetings &#8211; from being self-conscious about one&#8217;s appearance or home to impromptu appearances from children and pets.\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"x_x_gmail-s6\">But it\u2019s not only others in your house who could cause a distraction. Making sure that your mobile is silent and your email notifications are off will help also eliminate distractions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_x_gmail-p9\" style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span class=\"x_x_gmail-s2\"><b>2. Avoid Multitasking<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_x_gmail-p8\" style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span class=\"x_x_gmail-s2\">It is tempting to respond to emails or work on the laptop; if you\u2019re muted, no one will notice.\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"x_x_gmail-s6\">But, before responding to an email or looking over notes for a project, ask yourself if it can wait until there&#8217;s a break. Permit yourself to concentrate on one task at a time.<\/span><span class=\"x_x_gmail-s6\"><span class=\"x_x_gmail-Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_x_gmail-p8\" style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span class=\"x_x_gmail-s5\"><strong>3.\u00a0<\/strong><b>Adjust Your Screen Settings<\/b><\/span><span class=\"x_x_gmail-s5\"><b><span class=\"x_x_gmail-Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_x_gmail-p11\" style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span class=\"x_x_gmail-s6\">Choose \u2018Speaker View\u2019.\u00a0You can select the Speaker View so you only focus on the person who is talking. This keeps you from constantly looking at others on the call. It&#8217;s easier to see who&#8217;s talking and more closely mimics how we focus on a current speaker in a group conversation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_x_gmail-p9\" style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span class=\"x_x_gmail-s2\"><b>4. Allow Time Before You Tackle Your Agenda<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_x_gmail-p12\" style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span class=\"x_x_gmail-s6\">If you\u2019re the one leading the Zoom call,<\/span><span class=\"x_x_gmail-s2\">\u00a0send everyone an agenda and relevant documents. Ask them to review this information before the meeting. A shared screen or a shared document can be really helpful for keeping everyone on the same page.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_x_gmail-p8\" style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span class=\"x_x_gmail-s2\">If you haven\u2019t met in a while, schedule a few minutes for catching up before the meeting start to help everyone get into the meeting mindset and, if required, open relevant documents and view the agenda.<\/span><span class=\"x_x_gmail-s2\"><span class=\"x_x_gmail-Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_x_gmail-p9\" style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span class=\"x_x_gmail-s2\"><b>5. Take a Break After a Zoom Meeting<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_x_gmail-p13\" style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span class=\"x_x_gmail-s6\">If you were working in an office,\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"x_x_gmail-s2\">then you&#8217;d usually have a gap between a previous meeting and the next one. Y<\/span><span class=\"x_x_gmail-s6\">ou would also take breaks to make a coffee or speak to a colleague. But when you are working from home you must consciously create new opportunities for yourself to de-stress throughout the day.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_x_gmail-p13\"><span class=\"x_x_gmail-s2\">If you follow these guidelines, you\u2019ll be able\u00a0to avoid\u00a0\u2019Zoom fatigue\u2019. You\u2019ll have a much more balanced schedule, better sleep, less disruption, and you\u2019ll feel more in charge of your daily life as a whole.
